Make Money Online - Glossary
If you're new to all of this there are a number of terms which you will no doubt come across. Here is a brief run through some of the most important and commonly used terms with which you may not be familiar.
What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is a phenomenon that is changing the world of commerce.
Basically affiliates help to sell other people's products and in doing so they get a share of any profits. You can do this. Anyone can do this and that's really why I wrote my small ebook "click your way to cash for free".
As an affiliate you can sell everything from ebooks to Plasma Televisions. The beauty is that you don't need to hold any stock. You do no packing and posting and the whole thing runs in cyberspace on the Internet so you literally can earn while you sleep.
What is Clickbank?
You'll find reference to Clickbank in a number of places. This is essentially an online marketplace for ebooks and other electronic products and many products reside in one large market place.
I explain Clickbank in much more detail in my own product Click Your Way to Cash for FREE! which I created to make starting out in affiliate marketing as easy as possible.
What is Google AdWords?
For ages Internet search engines used to provide every link for free. Then someone had the bright idea of allowing advertisers to pay for links by having them bid for each of the possible search terms. It's a somewhat complicated system to get used to and can be a minefield but if you're serious about making money online it's likely that you'll want to use it at some stage. It allows you to get a web site visited by thousands of people literally the day after it was created instead of waiting months for it to be indexed by the search engines.
Google's AdWords system is used by a couple of other search engines but most of the competing search engines use a product called "Overture".
AdWords can either be wonderful for marketing or an expensive exercise in failure. If you intend to use it, it makes sense to read up first.
What is Overture?
Overture is Yahoo's pay per click advertising competitor to Google's AdWords. Overture looks set to change name in the near future so it may well soon be called "Yahoo! Marketing Solutions". Many Internet marketeers prefer Overture but at the same time we must remember that Google probably gets more traffic.
(Traffic = volume of people using the service)
What is Google AdSense?
Google's AdSense is in effect the reverse of AdWords. With AdWords people pay Google for clicks on their links. AdSense works the other way around, inasmuch as Google actually place their AdWords adverts onto people's web sites.
Each time someone clicks on one of those links the web site owner gets money from Google. If you have a web site and you want to do this then you need to sign up and insert some Google specific code into your web site pages. It sounds great in principle but the drawback of course is that every time someone clicks on one of those links they are actually leaving your web site.
If you want to see what it looks like I actually have an example of this running on another website of mine so that you can see it. If you'd like to take a look then visit the Richimajin-stores site. When you do, and if you decide to follow any of the AdSense links, remember that they were placed there by Google not me and I have far less control over what appears on that particular web site.
What is Drop Shipping?
Drop shipping is somewhat similar to affiliate selling except that you sell the goods and take the payment. You then pay a Drop Shipping company (essentially a wholesaler) and they post it out to your customer.
What is an Ebay Affiliate?
Okay, now it gets even weirder. You can actually have Ebay listings inserted into your web site too if you have one. You get a commission on any sales made via your web site. Once again you need to insert some special code that they give you to make this work.
Summary
You will doubtless come across other terms that you are not familiar with but these are the one's that most people want to know about.
