Okay, so you are planning to advertise a website or a product by means of a pay per click campain. Why? Because you want to make money online and it's the quickest way to do it. Most likely it will be on Google using AdWords so I've assumed that's the case. It has to be said though that many Internet Marketeers prefer Overture for their online money making ventures. The choice is yours. Ideally use both. For the purpose of simplicity I'm assuming that it's going to be Google AdWords. Remember that if you undertake this you're going to pay for every user click on your advert. Only a proportion of those who click will become buyers. What this means is that you need to get each click for as little as possible. The price you offer per click is essentially a bid and you're up against other paying bidders. Whether or not your advert even appears depends upon whether you are in the top few bidders. Ideally you want to be at about position 3 it will be cheaper than position 1 but still high enough to get your advert noticed.

The art of fine tuning your pay per click campain, (and it really is an art) is explained in detail elsewhere. All I can do here is cover the basics. It is important to tune your ads because if you want to make money online you need to eek every bit of value out of your advertising

Before you set up your AdWords campain there's another vital ingredient to your upcoming success.

You MUST have a product that people will actually want to buy. Let's be realistic. You can only make money online if you are selling a product that people actually want to buy. It can be yours or it could be someone else's and sold by you as an affiliate. Either is fine. Both can make you money.

Suppose you make $20 for each item sold and it averages out at about 100 clicks before anyone makes a purchase. You need to make sure that you're spending less than 20 cents per click just to break even, otherwise you're going to lose out in the long run. 10 cents would be fine. Remember, this is purely a numbers game.

It is better to sell 1000 items at a profit of $3 each than to sell 100 items at a profit of $20 each.

When considering the viability of your online money making campain, you must always factor in volume of sales and pay per click campains can give you instant volume in terms of visits.

Note: Pay per click can be amazingly profitable or it can be horribly expensive. You and your tactics will entirely determine which of the two it's going to be.

I'm not going to go into detail about the design of your AdWords ad in detail. That choice is up to you and there are products listed on this site that will help you with that.

However you decide to word it, it needs to sell your item but at the same time it must meet Google's rules. If your advert doesn't correspond with their guidelines you will most likely be informed when you submit it.

What search terms should you use?

Now think about what you yourself would type in to find a product of the type your selling.

Come up with as many good search terms as you can.

Perhaps you haven't found this before. If not it's very, very useful when you're planning a pay per click advertising campain!

Just type in some keywords or phrases that people might be using. Overture will return a list of every search term that contained those keywords or phrases within the last month and also how many times.

Wow! how fab is that?

This makes planning a pay per click campain so much easier and with good keywords you are closer to your goal of making money online.

Remember that these search terms were only used on the Yahoo related search engines and Google's may be slightly different but even so this very valuable information because you can use this to refine your list of search terms for your pay per click campain.

Lastly, remember that when starting your campain you should limit the budget. It's all to easy to spend on clicks and make a loss over a week or so. Take care to limit your budget.

Personally I'd recommend that you get as much information as possible before you embark on using AdWords for the first time but the choice is yours. If you decide to go it alone then remember to keep your daily budget low at first!

Lastly, pay per click is useful because it instantly gets a website listed by the search engines. If you choose to run campains with Google AdWords and Overture too, your site (if you have one) will be indexed by all of the major search engines almost immediately.

Pay per click is a great and very speedy way to make money online but you must be careful to follow the rules and get as much information before you starts as you can.
